Sophie Soon is a 19 year old national swimmer and violinist, who is currently pursuing a Diploma in Business Management from Nanyang Polytechnic. At the age of 5, she was diagnosed with cone rod dystrophy, a condition that has caused her vision to deteriorate rapidly. Despite being labelled as legally blind since the age of 11, Sophie has never let anybody set limitations onto what she can achieve in life, particularly in the areas of sports and music. A talented violinist, Sophie uses her memory to learn her scores, and also works closely with her music teacher during practice sessions. She is currently setting her sight on representing Singapore at the Paralympics.

Sophie’s journey to becoming a national swimmer highlights the power of the individual will in the face of society’s limitations and is a reminder to us that we can all achieve what we want if we only put our hearts and minds to it.
