Claire is a director, actress and also the co-founder of Checkpoint Theatre, a theatre company which is based in Singapore. Since young, Claire has always had a passion for theatre, and was fortunate enough to find herself surrounded by like-minded peers, who encouraged her to pursue her interest. Despite studying law as an undergraduate and eventually starting a career in the legal industry, Claire continued to actively participate in the Singaporean theatre scene and even took a break from the corporate world to further her studies in New York, where she graduated with a Master of Fine Arts in Theatre Arts from Columbia University.

Inspired by the amazing scripts they were getting from local students in a playwriting course taught by her husband, Huzir Sulaiman, Claire and Huzir decided to set up Checkpoint Theatre in 2002 as a sanctuary where Singaporean theatre-makers could grow their craft. Checkpoint Theatre focuses on developing original, thought-provoking works by local playwrights and hopes to nurture the next generation of voices in the local theatre scene. Since its inception, they have staged numerous award-winning plays, and have actively focused on telling stories which are drawn from the Asian context.
